GMC is recalling 9 2022 Hummer EV Pickup vehicles under recall 22V141 because taillight software can leave one or both rear taillights inoperative, fully lit, or partly lit. Incorrect taillight operation can reduce visibility or send the wrong signal to other drivers, increasing crash risk; a Hummer dealer will complete the free software repair.

What's wrong?
The taillamp assembly on the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup is the rear lighting unit built into the body structure. It handles signals other drivers rely on at the back of the truck, including rear lamp and turn signal functions. A small microcontroller inside the assembly runs embedded software that tells the lamp when to turn on, turn off, or stay at the right brightness.
On affected trucks, the embedded software in that microcontroller is wrong. The taillight software can leave one or both rear taillights inoperative, or keep them fully or partly lit when they should change state. That means the hardware is not the main issue; replacement taillamp assemblies use corrected software in the microcontroller.
The driver can see a warning in the instrument display when the problem involves a turn signal. The message says "Check [Right/Left] Rear Turn Lamp" when the affected turn signal is activated.

What's the safety risk?
A taillight failure makes the Hummer EV Pickup harder to see and can send the wrong lighting or turn signal message to nearby drivers, increasing crash risk. If the rear turn lamp warning appears, treat it as a reason to schedule service soon. Repair is free at any franchised Hummer dealer.

What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Hummer technician inspects the left rear taillight assembly, right rear taillight assembly, or both, then replaces any assembly covered by the recall that needs replacement. The recall repair is free, and GMC reported that all covered vehicles were remedied as of March 17, 2022. Prior out-of-pocket repair costs are handled through the existing warranty, not a separate reimbursement program, because all covered vehicles are under warranty. Ask the service desk how warranty coverage applies if you have prior repair paperwork.
