BMW is recalling 917,106 2006-2013 128I, 3 Series, 5 Series, X3 Sav, X5 Sav, and Z4 vehicles because the positive crankcase ventilation valve heater can short circuit. A short can overheat the heater and increase the risk of a fire while driving or soon after parking; BMW dealers will complete the repair free of charge once BMW makes it available.

What's wrong?
The PCV valve heater on BMW 2006-2013 Z4, 3 Series, 5 Series, X5 Sav, X3 Sav, and 128I vehicles sits in the crankcase ventilation system. That system routes engine vapors from the crankcase back into the intake, and the heater helps keep the valve area clear in cold conditions.
On affected vehicles, irregularities in the supplier production process left the PCV valve heater vulnerable to internal damage over time. When the heater shorts, electrical current follows the wrong path. That can make the heater overheat near the engine compartment, where heat, plastic parts, and wiring are already close together.
Owners can see the Malfunction Indicator Lamp, often called the check engine light. Smoke near the engine compartment or a plastic burning odor are also warning signs that the heater area is overheating.

What's the safety risk?
An electrical short can cause the PCV valve heater to overheat, increasing fire risk while driving or soon after parking. Watch for a malfunction indicator lamp, smoke near the engine compartment, or a plastic burning odor. If smoke or a burning odor appears, pull over in a safe place and call the dealer. Repair will be free at any franchised BMW dealer once available.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2006-2013 BMW Z4, 3 Series, 5 Series, X5 Sav, X3 Sav, or 128I is included in this recall.
- Contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 if you never received BMW's owner letter or need the current repair status.
- Ask a franchised BMW dealer whether the free PCV valve heater wiring harness with fuse protection is ready for your VIN.
- Reference recall number 22V119 when you call, and mention that prior repairs under recalls 17V-683 or 19V-273 do not close this recall.
- Watch for smoke, a burning smell, or heat from the engine area, and stop driving if you notice signs of a fire risk.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a BMW technician will install an electrical wiring harness with fuse protection for the PCV valve heater once the final remedy is available. Parts and labor are covered under the recall. This recall expands prior BMW recalls, so vehicles repaired under earlier recalls still need the new remedy. If you already paid for this PCV valve heater remedy before the recall notice, BMW's standard reimbursement plan handles eligible documented expenses. Contact BMW customer service or bring your repair documentation to the service desk.
