What's wrong?
The brake fluid reservoir on the 2016-2021 Mercedes-Benz Metris stores the fluid the brake system uses to build hydraulic pressure. When you press the brake pedal, that fluid moves through the brake lines so the brakes can clamp at the wheels. An expansion rivet helps hold the reservoir in the proper position, so the reservoir stays attached as the van moves and vibrates.
On affected Metris vans, the reservoir was installed incorrectly. The mounting point does not hold the reservoir as intended, which allows it to loosen or detach from its proper position. Once that happens, the brake system can lose fluid at the reservoir, and the pedal can lose normal resistance because the system has less fluid pressure to work with.
You can see a brake warning lamp in the instrument cluster before the reservoir fully detaches. You can also feel the brake pedal get gradually softer than normal.
Who's affected?
The same hydraulic brake system component appears across the 2016 through 2021 Metris model years.

The year and model narrow the scope, but the VIN decides. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific van is included.
What's the safety risk?
If the brake fluid reservoir detaches, brake fluid can leak and increase the risk of a crash. A brake warning lamp or a gradually softer brake pedal is a sign to stop driving, pull over safely, and call the dealer. Schedule the recall repair soon. Repair is free at any franchised Mercedes-Benz dealer.

What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Mercedes-Benz technician inspects the brake fluid reservoir mounting and repairs it if the mounting is loose or incorrect. The inspection and any needed repair are free under the recall. Out-of-pocket repairs already paid are handled through the new vehicle warranty, not through a separate reimbursement program. If you paid for related brake fluid reservoir work before the recall notice, ask the service desk how the warranty applies to your prior repair paperwork.
