Recall 21V955 covers 198,255 2019-2020 Subaru Outback, Ascent, and Legacy vehicles for a TCU programming error. Repair is free at any franchised Subaru dealer.
Subaru is recalling 198,255 2019-2020 Ascent, Legacy, and Outback vehicles because a TCU programming error can let the clutch engage before the drive chain is fully clamped. An unsecured drive chain can slip and break, causing loss of drive power and increasing crash risk; Subaru dealers will complete the free recall repair.

What's wrong?
The Transmission Control Unit, or TCU, is the computer that manages how the automatic transmission applies pressure and engages clutches. In the 2019-2020 Subaru Outback, Ascent, and Legacy, that computer controls the forward/reverse clutch and the drive chain, the metal chain that transfers engine power through the transmission.
On affected vehicles, the TCU program lets the forward/reverse clutch start to engage before the drive chain is fully clamped. This happens when the shifter is moved into Drive or Reverse immediately after the engine starts. Without enough clamping pressure, the chain can slip and damage the chain guide or leave the transmission unable to complete the shift.
There is no warning sign before failure. Owners reported problems such as not shifting into Drive or Park, not starting, or contamination in the transmission fluid pan after damage had already occurred.

What's the safety risk?
An improperly secured drive chain can slip and break, causing a loss of drive power and increasing the risk of a crash. There is no warning sign before failure. Drive cautiously, avoid delaying the repair, and contact a Subaru dealer for service. Repair is free at any franchised Subaru dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2019-2020 Subaru Outback, Ascent, or Legacy is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Subaru dealer to schedule the free TCU reprogramming and drive-chain inspection that corrects the transmission programming error and checks for chain slip.
- Bring the recall notice if Subaru mailed one, and reference recall number 21V955 when you call.
- Ask the dealer to inspect the TCU data and chain guide; Subaru replaces the transmission for free if chain slip or damage is found.
- Drive cautiously until the repair is complete, and pull over safely if the vehicle loses drive power.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Subaru technician reprograms the TCU, checks TCU data for chain slip, and visually inspects the chain guide. If the inspection shows chain slippage or damage, Subaru replaces the transmission. Parts and labor are covered under the recall. If you already paid for a related transmission repair before the recall notice, Subaru provides reimbursement under its general reimbursement plan. Ask Subaru customer service or the dealer how to submit documentation for review.

Frequently asked questions
What is recall 21V955?
Recall 21V955 covers 198,255 2019-2020 Subaru Outback, Ascent, and Legacy vehicles with a Transmission Control Unit programming error. The clutch can engage before the drive chain is fully clamped, which can let the chain slip or break and cause loss of drive power.
What should I do if my 2019-2020 Subaru Outback, Ascent, or Legacy is on this recall?
Check your VIN to confirm your specific vehicle is included in recall 21V955. If it is, contact a franchised Subaru dealer and ask for recall WRK-21. The dealer will reprogram the Transmission Control Unit, inspect the data and chain guide, and replace the transmission if damage is found.
Is the Subaru recall repair free?
Yes. Federal recall law requires the defect repair at no cost, and Subaru says the TCU reprogramming, inspections, and any needed transmission replacement will be performed free of charge at a franchised Subaru dealer.
Is it safe to drive a Subaru affected by recall 21V955?
The official risk is loss of drive power from a slipping or broken drive chain, which increases crash risk. Subaru has not issued a do-not-drive instruction for this recall. If your vehicle hesitates, loses power, or feels unsafe, stop driving and ask the dealer about towing.
What if my Subaru was already repaired under recall 19V-855?
Recall 21V955 includes vehicles previously recalled under 19V-855. Subaru says those vehicles need the new WRK-21 remedy as well. Check your VIN, then ask a Subaru dealer to confirm whether the updated TCU programming and inspections are still open for your vehicle.
