2021 Volvo Vnl Recall 21V858: Power Steering Seal Defect

Recall 21V858 affects 3 2021 Volvo Vnl trucks for a power-steering-pump defect. Repair is free at any franchised Volvo dealer.

Volvo is recalling 3 2021 Vnl vehicles because a machining defect can let pressure build in the power steering pump, breaking the shaft seal and causing loss of power steering assist. That loss of assist increases crash risk, and Volvo dealers will complete the recall repair free of charge.

What's wrong?

The power steering pump on the 2021 Volvo Vnl helps move hydraulic fluid through the steering system. That fluid gives the driver assist at the wheel, so turning the truck takes less physical effort, especially at low speed or during yard maneuvers. The pump has a shaft seal that keeps fluid and pressure contained while the pump rotates.

In the affected pumps, the rotor grinding process left a localized flat area on the end face of the steering pump motor. That manufacturing defect lets pressure build inside the pump. The pressure can break the shaft seal, and once the seal fails, the truck loses power steering assist.

There is no warning sign before failure. If the assist drops out, the steering wheel still steers the truck, but it takes more force from the driver, which makes low-speed turns and parking maneuvers harder to handle.

What's the safety risk?

A loss of power steering assist makes the truck harder to steer and increases the risk of a crash. If steering effort changes or the truck feels harder to control, pull over when safe and call the dealer. Repair is free at any franchised Volvo dealer.
