What's wrong?
The side door pressure remote sensing unit on covered 2021-2022 Ford F-150, F-350 Sd, F-250 Sd, Expedition, and Navigator vehicles is a sensor inside the front door. In a side impact, it reads a rapid pressure change in the door and sends that crash information to the airbag system, so the side impact air bags deploy as designed.
In recall 21V805, the sensor module was damaged during supplier assembly. A programming fixture contacted the top of the sensor after an adjustment at the supplier, and that contact left damage that was not visible once the sensor was completed. Ford found that a damaged unit passed supplier testing and was installed in vehicles.
The risk is that the side impact air bags do not deploy properly in a crash. The warning sign to watch for is an airbag malfunction indicator lamp in the instrument cluster. If that light is on, tell the Ford dealer when you schedule the recall repair.

What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Ford technician replaces the driver and passenger front door side impact sensors. These sensors help the air bag system read a side impact, so the repair focuses on replacing the damaged sensor modules rather than adjusting the air bags themselves. The replacement parts and labor are free under the recall. Ford is not offering a separate reimbursement program because the original warranty program provides a free repair for this concern. Ask the service desk how warranty coverage applies if you have prior repair paperwork.
