What's wrong?
The fuel pump mounting ring is the ring that locks the fuel pump assembly into the top of the fuel tank and helps seal that opening. On these Mazda RX-8 and MAZDASPEED6 vehicles, the ring has to hold the pump in place while keeping gasoline inside the tank during normal driving.
On affected RX-8 vehicles, heat from the engine and exhaust area can damage the top side of the fuel tank over time. That heat exposure lets the mounting ring deteriorate and crack. On affected RX-8 and MAZDASPEED6 vehicles, the ring also was installed improperly on some vehicles, which puts stress on the part and leads to cracking. Once the ring cracks, fuel escapes from the pump opening.
If fuel leakage occurs, the driver can notice a gasoline smell or fuel under the vehicle. Treat either sign as a warning that the fuel pump mounting area is no longer sealed the way it should be.

What's the safety risk?
A fuel leak near an ignition source increases the risk of a fire. If you smell fuel or see fuel under the vehicle, stop using it and call a Mazda dealer before driving again. Repair is free at any franchised Mazda dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 Mazda RX-8 or MAZDASPEED6 is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Mazda dealer to schedule the free fuel-pump-mounting-ring repair that addresses fuel leaking from the pump area.
- Ask the dealer whether your RX-8 also needs the thermal insulation pad for the fuel tank.
- Bring the recall notice if you have it, and reference recall number 21V744 when you call.
- Avoid open flames, sparks, and other ignition sources near the vehicle until the repair is complete.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Mazda technician installs new fuel pump mounting rings to address leaks at the pump area. On RX-8 vehicles, the technician also adds a thermal insulation pad to the fuel tank. Parts and labor are covered by the recall. Because these vehicles are not covered under the new vehicle warranty, Mazda is offering a reimbursement program for related out-of-pocket repairs paid before the recall. If you already paid for this repair, ask Mazda customer service or the service desk how to submit documentation for review.

Frequently asked questions
What is recall 21V744?
Recall 21V744 covers 13,891 Mazda RX-8 and MAZDASPEED6 vehicles with fuel pump mounting rings that can leak fuel. A fuel leak near an ignition source increases fire risk. Mazda dealers will install new fuel pump mounting rings for free.
What should I do if my 2009-2011 Mazda RX-8 or 2006-2007 Mazda MAZDASPEED6 is on this recall?
Check your VIN to confirm your specific vehicle is included in recall 21V744. If it is, contact a franchised Mazda dealer to schedule the fuel pump mounting ring repair. Reference recall number 21V744 or Mazda recall number 5121I when you call.
Is the recall repair free?
Yes. Federal recall law requires the manufacturer to repair the defect at no cost, and Mazda says dealers will perform this repair free of charge. The dealer will install new fuel pump mounting rings, and RX-8 vehicles also receive a thermal insulation pad for the fuel tank.
What is the safety risk?
The safety risk is fire from a fuel leak. Mazda reported that fuel can leak from the fuel pump mounting rings. If leaked fuel reaches an ignition source, fire risk increases. If you smell fuel or see a leak, stop driving and call a Mazda dealer for guidance.
What if I bought this Mazda used?
The free recall repair still applies. Recall coverage follows the vehicle, not the first owner. Mazda mailed owner notification letters on November 17, 2021, but a used-vehicle owner can miss that letter. Check your VIN, then call a franchised Mazda dealer if your vehicle is included.
