Mci is recalling 510 2005-2012 J4500 and E4500 motorcoaches equipped with Ricon Baylift wheelchair lifts because the lift outer barrier can fail when a mobility device presses against it. The defect increases the risk of injury for the lift occupant, and Mci dealers will complete the free recall repair.

What's wrong?
The Ricon Baylift on 2005-2012 Mci J4500 and E4500 motorcoaches is a wheelchair lift assembly that raises and lowers a passenger between the ground and the coach floor. Its outer barrier is the gate at the edge of the platform. When the lift is deployed, that barrier is supposed to help keep the wheelchair and passenger from rolling off the platform.
On these motorcoaches, the lift design predates the April 1, 2005 compliance date for platform lift rules. When the outer barrier is fully deployed, it does not withstand enough force. If weight or movement pushes against the barrier while someone is on the platform, the barrier can fail instead of holding its position.
There is no warning sign before failure. The barrier can look normal before it is used, and the modified barrier assembly will look different from the original configuration after the recall repair.

What's the safety risk?
If a mobility device presses into the lift's outer barrier, the barrier can fail and increase injury risk for the lift occupant. There is no warning sign before barrier failure. Use extra care loading and securing mobility devices, and schedule the repair soon. Repair is free at any franchised Mci dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2005-2012 Mci J4500 or E4500 is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Mci dealer to schedule the free Ricon wheelchair-lift outer-barrier reinforcement.
- Bring the owner letter if you have it. If not, reference recall number 21V737 and Mci recall R21-024 when you call.
- Keep riders clear of the wheelchair lift until the barrier reinforcement is complete if the outer barrier does not feel secure.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer or service center, an MCI technician reinforces the Ricon wheelchair lift outer barrier with additional supports. The added supports help constrain the barrier at the hinge area when the lift is fully deployed. Instructions, parts, and labor are covered under the recall, so the corrective work is free. Ricon's plan also covers labor required to modify the existing barrier assembly. Contact Ricon Customer Service or MCI Customer Service to arrange the repair and ask how labor reimbursement is handled for eligible work already completed.
