2020-2021 Volvo XC60/XC90/S90 Recall 21V716: Rotor Weld

Recall 21V716 covers 9 2020-2021 Volvo XC90, XC60, and S90 vehicles for an integrated brake-system weld defect. Repair is free at any franchised Volvo dealer.

Volvo is recalling 9 2020-2021 XC90, XC60, and S90 vehicles because an improperly welded rotor and shaft can separate inside the integrated brake system. If the parts separate, braking assistance drops and ABS and Electronic Stability Control are lost, which increases crash risk; Volvo dealers will complete the repair free of charge.

What's wrong?

The hydraulic unit in the brake system on the 2020-2021 Volvo XC90, XC60, and S90 helps control brake pressure. It works with the antilock brake and stability control systems, which adjust pressure at the wheels to help keep the vehicle stable while braking. Inside that unit, an electric motor uses a rotor shaft and magnet package to help run the system.

On affected vehicles, the weld between the motor's rotor shaft and magnet package was partially missing or fully missing. That weak joint can let the rotor and shaft separate inside the integrated brake system. If that happens, the system falls back to hydraulic braking, but the driver has to press harder and move the pedal farther for less braking than normal.

Before failure, the red brake warning light, ABS warning light, and ESC warning light can turn on. You can also feel longer brake-pedal travel and a need for higher pedal force.

Who's affected?

Covers the XC90, XC60, and S90 across the 2020 and 2021 model years; every listed configuration involves the hydraulic brake system.

Field incidentsNHTSA has logged no field incidents to date.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether this recall applies to your specific vehicle.

What's the safety risk?

A separated rotor and shaft reduces braking assist and disables ABS and ESC, increasing crash risk. If the red brake, ABS, or ESC warning light comes on, expect higher pedal effort, longer pedal travel, and less deceleration than normal. Drive cautiously and schedule the repair soon. Repair is free at any franchised Volvo dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2020-2021 Volvo XC90, XC60, or S90 vehicle is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised Volvo dealer to schedule the free hydraulic-unit replacement that fixes the brake-system rotor and shaft separation risk.
  3. Bring the recall notice if you have it. If not, reference recall number 21V716 when you call.
  4. Call Volvo customer service at 1-888-458-1552 with questions about scheduling or the repair.
  5. Drive cautiously until the repair is complete. Leave extra following distance and avoid hard braking.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Volvo technician replaces the hydraulic unit in the integrated brake system. The dealer repair is available, and Volvo covers the replacement parts and labor under the recall. If you've already paid out of pocket for a related brake repair, Volvo has a general reimbursement plan on file. Bring repair invoices, receipts, and dealer paperwork to the service desk so they can route the claim under that plan.
