Maserati is recalling 701 2021 Ghibli, Quattroporte, and Levante vehicles because the seat belt automatic locking retractors can deactivate early and stop a child restraint system from securing properly. An unsecured child restraint system can increase injury risk in a crash, and Maserati dealers will complete the recall repair free of charge.

What's wrong?
The seat belt retractor in a 2021 Maserati Ghibli, Quattroporte, or Levante winds the belt back in and locks it when needed. When a child seat is installed with the seat belt, the automatic locking retractor, or ALR, is supposed to hold the belt at a fixed length so the child restraint stays tight.
On affected vehicles, the ALR lever inside the retractor was not formed correctly. That lever can let the automatic locking function release earlier than intended. If it releases too soon, the belt no longer holds the child seat as firmly as the occupant protection standard requires.
Someone installing a child seat with the seat belt can notice that the seat does not tighten properly or loosens after being pulled snug. That loose fit is the warning sign to take seriously before using that seating position for a child restraint.
Who's affected?
Ghibli, Quattroporte, and Levante share the same ALR (KiSi) lever concern across rear retractor, front retractor, and seat belt components.

What's the safety risk?
An unsecured child restraint system increases the risk of injury during a crash. If a child seat does not tighten properly with the seat belt, use another seating position or another vehicle for that passenger until the dealer inspects the belt. Repair is free at any franchised Maserati dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2021 Maserati Ghibli, Quattroporte, or Levante is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Maserati dealer to schedule the free seat belt inspection and any assembly replacement needed to keep the automatic locking retractor engaged for child restraints.
- Bring the recall notice to the appointment, or reference recall number 21V703 and Maserati recall 434 when you call.
- Use another seating position for a child restraint until the dealer confirms the seat belt assembly has passed inspection or been replaced.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Maserati technician inspects the seat belt assemblies and replaces any assembly that fails inspection. The recall repair is free, with parts and labor covered. Maserati has a general reimbursement plan on file for owners who paid for a related seat belt repair before the recall notice. Keep repair invoices and payment records, then contact Maserati customer service or ask the dealer service desk how to submit the claim under that plan.

Frequently asked questions
What is recall 21V703?
Recall 21V703 covers 701 2021 Maserati Ghibli, Quattroporte, and Levante vehicles with seat belt automatic locking retractors that can deactivate early. That defect can prevent a child restraint system from securing properly. Maserati dealers will inspect and replace the affected seat belt assemblies for free.
What should I do if my 2021 Maserati Ghibli, Quattroporte, or Levante is on this recall?
Check your VIN to confirm your specific vehicle is included in recall 21V703. If it is, call a franchised Maserati dealer and ask for the seat belt retractor inspection under recall 21V703. The dealer will replace affected seat belt assemblies at no charge.
Is the recall repair free?
Yes. Federal recall law requires the manufacturer to repair the defect at no cost, and Maserati's remedy says dealers will inspect and replace the seat belt assemblies as needed free of charge.
What is the safety risk?
The risk is an unsecured child restraint system during a crash. The seat belt automatic locking retractor can deactivate early, which can stop the child restraint from staying properly secured and increase the risk of injury.
What if I bought my Maserati used?
The free recall repair still applies. Recall eligibility follows the VIN, not the first owner. Check your VIN, then contact a franchised Maserati dealer with recall 21V703. Maserati mailed owner letters on October 15, 2021, so a used buyer did not always receive the original notice.
