What's wrong?
The seat belt retractor is the spool mechanism that feeds and locks the belt. In these 2020-2022 Land Rover Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Sport, Discovery Sport, Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender vehicles, the affected front or rear seat belt is also supposed to hold a child restraint tightly when the automatic locking retractor is engaged.
That automatic locking mode keeps the belt from feeding back out after you pull it all the way out and tighten a child seat. A supplier manufacturing issue affected the small lever inside the retractor. The lever can switch out of automatic locking mode too early and return the belt to emergency locking mode, which lets the belt loosen instead of staying fixed around the child restraint.
There is no warning sign before failure. The belt can extend, retract, and look normal, but the child seat is not secured the way it should be if the automatic locking function releases early.

What's the safety risk?
An unsecured child restraint system can increase the risk of injury during a crash. If your VIN is included, schedule the inspection soon and have the dealer check the seat belt assemblies. Until then, make sure every child restraint is latched and belted exactly as the seat and vehicle instructions require. Repair is free at any franchised Land Rover dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2020-2022 Land Rover Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Sport, Discovery Sport, Range Rover, Discovery, or Defender is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Land Rover dealer to schedule the free seat belt inspection and assembly replacement for the retractors that can stop a child restraint from securing properly.
- Bring the recall notice if Land Rover mailed one. Reference recall number 21V668 and Land Rover recall N630 when you call.
- Avoid installing a child restraint in a seating position with an unrepaired automatic locking retractor until the dealer inspects it.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Land Rover technician inspects the seat belt assemblies and replaces any assemblies covered by the recall that do not pass inspection. Parts and labor are free under the recall. If you already paid out of pocket for a related seat belt repair, Land Rover uses its general reimbursement plan on file for documented, eligible expenses. Bring repair paperwork to the service desk or contact Land Rover customer service.
