What's wrong?
The S-cam brake on the 2021 Mack Lr, Granite (Gr), and Te is part of the truck's air brake system. It is an S-shaped shaft inside the drum brake assembly. When air pressure applies the brakes, the S-cam turns and pushes the brake shoes outward so they press against the drum and slow the rear drive axle.
On affected trucks, the rear drive axle can have the wrong type of S-cam installed, or the S-cams can be reversed. Mack traced the problem to offline repair work after production that was not completed correctly. With the wrong cam in place, the rear axle brakes can fail to apply as designed, leaving those brakes inoperative.
There is no warning sign before failure. The issue is in the brake hardware, so an owner is not expected to hear, smell, or feel a clear early symptom before the rear axle brakes stop working.
Who's affected?
Covers the Lr, Granite (Gr), and Te from the 2021 model year, all using the same S-Cam brake component.

What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Mack technician inspects the rear drive axle brake cams. If the wrong brake cams are installed, the technician replaces them and also replaces the brake shoes, hardware, and wheel seals as needed. The recall repair is free, including parts and labor. Mack used its standard reimbursement plan for this campaign, so documented out-of-pocket repairs tied to this brake cam issue are eligible for review. Bring prior repair paperwork to the service desk or contact Mack customer service for the submission process.
