What's wrong?
The side impact crash sensor on these 2020-2021 Mercedes-Benz vehicles is a pressure sensor tied into the supplemental restraint system, the air bag and seat belt safety system. In a side impact, the sensor helps the vehicle recognize the crash and send the signal that starts side air bag deployment and seat belt tightening.
On affected vehicles, a supplier production deviation left the plug connection on certain pressure sensors outside Mercedes-Benz specifications. The connector housing does not lock to the intended standard. If that connection loosens, the crash signal can be interrupted or delayed, which means the air bags and seat belts do not activate as quickly as designed in a side impact.
When the issue occurs, the instrument cluster displays a specific warning message and the SRS warning lamp turns on. Treat that warning as a sign that the restraint system needs dealer attention.

- Contact a franchised Mercedes-Benz dealer to schedule the free side impact crash sensor inspection and replacement that addresses loose sensor connectors.
- Bring the recall notice if you have it. If not, reference recall number 21V527 when you call.
- Avoid delaying the appointment, since loose side crash sensor connectors can delay air bag and seatbelt activation during a side impact crash.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Mercedes-Benz technician inspects the side impact crash sensor connectors and replaces the side impact crash sensors when the inspection shows they are needed. The recall repair is available now, and parts and labor are free. Repairs already paid before the owner letter are handled through the new vehicle warranty, not through a separate reimbursement program, because the involved vehicles remained under warranty. Ask the service desk how that warranty coverage applies if you have prior repair paperwork.
