What's wrong?

The high pressure fuel rail on affected 2017-2021 Mci coaches is part of the Cummins ISX12 diesel engine. It holds diesel fuel under pressure and sends it to the injection system, which meters fuel into the engine for combustion. The rail end sealing washer is supposed to seat tightly in its pilot bore so the joint stays sealed while the engine runs.

On these coaches, the pilot bore for the sealing washer is undersized. That prevents the washer from sitting correctly in the fuel rail end. With the washer out of position, the joint does not get the load it needs to stay sealed in service. Diesel fuel can leak from the high pressure fuel rail assembly.

The operator can see or smell diesel fuel before the problem is found. The check engine lamp can also illuminate. Treat those signs as a reason to stop using the coach until the fuel rail area is inspected and the recall repair is completed.

What's the safety risk?

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2017-2021 Mci D4000ISTV, J3500, D4000, D4005, D4500, J4500, D4505, or D45 Crt Le is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised Mci dealer to schedule the free fuel-rail inspection and rail replacement that fixes the sealing-washer leak point.
  3. Bring the recall notice if Mci mailed one. If not, reference recall number 21V364 when you call.
  4. Avoid open flames or ignition sources around the coach if you smell fuel, and park it until the dealer gives instructions.
  5. Call Mci customer service at 1-800-241-2947 with questions about scheduling or the free repair.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, an Mci technician inspects the fuel rail threads to confirm whether the sealing washer and rail are seated correctly. If the inspection shows damage or an incorrect fit, the technician replaces the rail. The recall covers parts and labor, so the dealer repair is free. Mci has a general reimbursement plan on file for owners who already paid for this repair. Contact Mci customer service with repair paperwork to ask how that plan applies to prior out-of-pocket work.
