2018-2022 Blue Bird All American Recall 21V312: Fuel Leak

Recall 21V312 affects 1,053 2018-2022 Blue Bird All American buses for a fuel rail leak that risks fire. Free repair once Blue Bird opens it.

Blue Bird is recalling 1,053 of its 2018-2022 All American and All American School Bus vehicles under recall 21V312 because the sealing washer in the high pressure fuel rail assembly can fail to seat correctly, allowing fuel to leak. A fuel leak near an ignition source raises the risk of a fire, and the final dealer repair will be free once Blue Bird opens it.

What's wrong?

The high pressure fuel rail on these Blue Bird All American buses is part of the Cummins L9 diesel fuel system. It holds diesel fuel under very high pressure and feeds it to the injectors at each cylinder. Sealing washers at the ends of the rail keep that pressurized fuel from escaping where the rail meets the fuel lines.

On affected buses, the pilot bore holes that hold those sealing washers were machined undersized. The washer does not seat fully into the bore, so the joint never gets the clamping load it needs. Over time the seal loosens and pressurized diesel fuel leaks out of the rail end. Leaking diesel near a hot engine is a fire risk, especially on a school bus carrying children.

The driver or operator will often see or smell diesel fuel around the engine. In some cases the check engine light comes on. Both are warning signs that the rail seal has started to fail.

Who's affected?

Covers two All American body styles across five model years (2018-2022), all built with the same Cummins high-pressure fuel rail assembly.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific bus is included in this recall.

What's the safety risk?

A diesel fuel leak near an ignition source raises the risk of a fire. Watch for visible fuel, a strong diesel smell, or an illuminated check engine lamp, and stop driving the bus if any of those appear. Park it away from buildings and other vehicles until the dealer inspects it. Repair will be free at any franchised Blue Bird dealer once available.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2018-2022 Blue Bird All American bus is included in this recall.
  2. Wait for the final repair instructions from Blue Bird. The remedy is still under development, and owner letters were mailed on July 30, 2021.
  3. Call Blue Bird customer service at 1-478-822-2242 with questions, and reference recall number 21V312 (Blue Bird recall R21BH-SB) when you call.
  4. Watch for a fuel smell or visible diesel leakage near the engine, since a leaking high-pressure fuel rail can ignite if it meets an ignition source.
  5. Contact your franchised Blue Bird dealer once the fix opens to schedule the free sealing-washer and fuel-rail repair that stops the leak.

What happens at the repair

The final dealer repair is still being developed by Cummins and Blue Bird, so it cannot be scheduled yet. Once the remedy is released, a Blue Bird technician will service the high pressure fuel rail assembly and correct the sealing washer seating in the pilot bore holes to stop the leak. Parts and labor will be free of charge under the recall once the repair opens. For units not covered by the existing limited warranty, Blue Bird has stated a recall-specific reimbursement plan will be posted in the Recall Portal. If you previously paid out of pocket for related fuel rail leak repairs, contact Blue Bird customer service at 1-478-822-2242 and reference recall number R21BH-SB to ask how to submit documentation once the plan is published.
