Porsche is recalling 193 2021 Cayman, Boxster, and 718 Spyder vehicles because the engine connecting rods can crack and loosen. What's wrong?

In recall 21V200, Porsche says the connecting rod is the engine link between a piston and the crankshaft. It changes the piston's up-and-down motion into rotation at the crankshaft, which is what lets the engine produce power. On the 2021 Porsche Cayman, Boxster, and 718 Spyder vehicles in this recall, that rod has to hold its shape under constant load.

The problem is a surface defect in the connecting rod. Porsche says rods that were not made to specification were installed in the affected engines. A rod with that defect can crack and loosen inside the engine, so the engine is no longer working with the solid mechanical link it needs between the piston and crankshaft.

Porsche lists engine crankshaft noise while driving as a warning sign. The instrument cluster can also show an oil pressure warning.

Who's affected?

All listed models share the same engine component, a connecting rod that links the piston to the crankshaft.

What's the safety risk?

A loose connection while driving puts the engine at risk of damage, stalling, or an oil leak, which increases crash or fire risk. If you hear crankshaft noise or see an oil pressure warning, pull over safely and call a Porsche dealer before continuing. Repair is free at any franchised Porsche dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2021 Porsche Cayman, Boxster, or 718 Spyder is included in this recall.
  2. Contact your nearest franchised Porsche dealer to schedule the free connecting-rod replacement or engine replacement that fixes rods that can crack and loosen.
  3. Bring the owner letter if you have it, and reference recall number 21V200 when you call.
  4. Drive cautiously until the repair is complete, and pull over safely if the engine stalls or you see an oil leak.
  5. Call Porsche customer service at 1-800-767-7243 with questions about Porsche recall AMA4.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Porsche technician replaces the engine connecting rods. If the damage requires more than rod replacement, the technician replaces the engine. The recall repair is free, including parts and labor. Porsche has a reimbursement plan on file for eligible out-of-pocket repairs paid before the recall notice. Bring repair orders, invoices, and proof of payment to the service desk so Porsche can review the claim.
