2021 Volkswagen Atlas/Cross Sport Recall 21V132: Wheels

Recall 21V132 covers 128 2021 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs for faulty wheel attachment. Repair is free at any franchised Volkswagen dealer.

Volkswagen is recalling 128 2021 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles because incorrectly machined lug bolt holes can keep the wheel bolts from attaching securely to the wheel bearing hub. If a wheel is not attached securely, it can separate from the vehicle and increase crash risk; Volkswagen dealers will complete the repair free of charge.

What's wrong?

The 20 inch wheel on the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport is the rim that mounts the tire and bolts to the wheel bearing hub. The lug bolt holes are supposed to be cut to the correct shape and position so the wheel bolts clamp the wheel tightly against the hub. That clamping force keeps the wheel seated while the SUV is driven, steered, and braked.

On affected vehicles, the supplier used incorrect parameters in the CNC cutting tool that machined those lug bolt holes. Because the release checks were not completed as required, some wheels left the supplier with holes that were out of specification. When the holes are wrong, the wheel bolt does not attach the wheel to the bearing hub with the intended grip.

There is no warning sign before failure. A wheel can look normal from outside, so the VIN and dealer inspection decide whether the affected 20 inch wheels are installed.

Field incidentsNHTSA has logged no field incidents to date.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific SUV is included.

What's the safety risk?

An insufficiently attached wheel can separate from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. There is no warning sign before failure, so confirm whether your VIN is included and schedule the repair soon. The dealer will inspect the wheels and replace wheels, lug bolts, and wheel bearings as needed. Repair is free at any franchised Volkswagen dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2021 Volkswagen Atlas or Atlas Cross Sport is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised Volkswagen dealer to schedule the free wheel and lug-bolt inspection.
  3. Bring the recall notice if Volkswagen mailed one. If not, reference recall number 21V132 when you call.
  4. Ask the dealer to inspect all four wheels and replace any affected wheel, lug bolts, and wheel bearing so the wheel attaches correctly to the hub.
  5. Drive cautiously until the repair is complete.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Volkswagen technician inspects all four wheels for incorrectly machined lug bolt holes. If an affected wheel is found, the technician replaces the wheel, lug bolts, and wheel bearing at no charge. Parts and labor are covered under the recall. Volkswagen is not offering a separate reimbursement program because the affected vehicles are within the new vehicle limited warranty period. Ask the service desk how that warranty coverage applies if you have prior repair paperwork.

Frequently asked questions

What is recall 21V132?

Recall 21V132 covers 128 2021 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles with wheels whose lug bolt holes were machined incorrectly. The wheel bolt can fail to attach the wheel securely to the bearing hub, and an insufficiently attached wheel can separate, increasing crash risk. Volkswagen dealers inspect all four wheels and replace affected parts for free.

What should I do if my 2021 Volkswagen Atlas or Atlas Cross Sport is on this recall?

Check your VIN to confirm your specific vehicle is included in recall 21V132. If it is, contact a franchised Volkswagen dealer to schedule the wheel inspection. Reference recall number 21V132 or Volkswagen recall number 44Q9 when you call. The dealer repair is free.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Federal recall law requires the manufacturer to repair this defect at no cost. Volkswagen dealers will inspect all four wheels and, if needed, replace the wheels, lug bolts, and wheel bearings free of charge.

What is the safety risk?

The safety risk is wheel separation. On affected vehicles, incorrectly machined lug bolt holes can prevent the wheel bolt from securing the wheel to the bearing hub. If a wheel separates while driving, crash risk increases. Check your VIN and arrange the free dealer inspection if your vehicle is included.

When did Volkswagen start this recall repair?
