What's wrong?
The steering gear on the 2020 Rosenbauer Commander is the heavy steering box mounted to the front suspension cradle. It turns driver input at the steering wheel into movement at the front wheels, so the mounting bolts have to hold the gear tight against its plate.
On affected Commanders, the paint on the steering gearcase mount plates keeps flowing and thinning after assembly. As that paint moves out from under the bolt head and washer, the bolt loses the stretch created during tightening. That loss of clamp load lets the bolts loosen, and road vibration then works them farther out. Once the steering gear is no longer held firmly, steering effort and steering precision change.
The driver can notice vague steering, difficulty holding a straight line, or vehicle wandering. The bolts also loosen without a warning sign, so a normal steering feel does not rule out the defect.
Who's affected?
The scope covers two related areas on the same Commander chassis: steering-system fasteners and the front suspension.

What's the safety risk?
Difficulty steering, or losing steering in both directions, increases the risk of a crash. Treat vague steering, trouble holding a straight line, or vehicle wandering as a reason to stop and arrange service. The steering fasteners can also loosen without warning. Repair is free at any franchised Rosenbauer dealer.

What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Rosenbauer technician replaces the steering gear mounting bolts and washers. Parts and labor are covered under the recall. Rosenbauer's repair process has the customer schedule the repair with the dealer, then the dealer alerts Rosenbauer and gets the repair kit through Rosenbauer or Reyco Granning. The steering gear mounting bolts are the parts being replaced, so ask the service desk to confirm that the recall kit is ready before the appointment.
