Recall 20V770 covers 248,358 2007-2015 Acura Ilx, Civic Hybrid, Fit, and Ilx Hybrid vehicles for drive-shaft coating defects. Repair will be free once available.
Acura is recalling 248,358 2007-2015 Ilx, Ilx Hybrid, Civic Hybrid, and Fit vehicles because an improperly applied drive shaft coating can leave the shaft vulnerable to road salt and other contaminants. A broken drive shaft can cause sudden loss of drive power or a rollaway after parking, and the dealer repair will be free once Acura opens it.

What's wrong?
The drive shaft on the 2007-2015 Acura Ilx, Civic Hybrid, Fit, and Ilx Hybrid vehicles in this recall transfers engine power to the wheels. It spins under load each time the vehicle accelerates, so its metal surface needs a protective coating that stays bonded and resists corrosion.
On affected vehicles, that coating did not adhere properly during manufacturing. Road debris can damage the coating, then road salt and other de-icing chemicals can collect on the exposed metal. Over time, the shaft can corrode and break under high torque, leaving the engine unable to propel the vehicle in any gear.
There is no warning sign before failure. The corrosion can build out of sight, so a vehicle that drove normally on the last trip can lose drive when the shaft breaks.

What's the safety risk?
A broken drive shaft can cause sudden loss of drive power. The vehicle can also roll away if the parking brake is not applied before exit. There is no warning sign before failure, so set the parking brake every time and schedule recall service once available. Repair will be free at any franchised Acura dealer once available.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2007-2015 Acura Ilx, Civic Hybrid, Fit, or Ilx Hybrid is included in this recall.
- Wait for Acura's remedy letter before scheduling the final drive-shaft inspection and replacement.
- Call Acura customer service at 1-888-234-2138 with questions and reference recall number 20V770 when you call.
- Apply the parking brake every time you park until the repair is complete, since a broken drive shaft can allow the vehicle to roll away.
- Drive cautiously until the repair opens. If the vehicle loses drive power, pull over safely and contact a franchised Acura dealer.
What happens at the repair
The final dealer repair is still under development. Once it opens, an Acura technician will inspect the drive shafts and replace the left or right drive shaft if the inspection shows replacement is needed. The final dealer repair will be free once available, with parts and labor covered under the recall. Honda uses its standard reimbursement plan for this campaign, so keep documentation for eligible out-of-pocket drive shaft repairs already paid and ask Acura service or Honda customer service how to submit it.
