The Battery Isolation Relay, also called the BIR, in 2020-2021 Thor Motor Coach Freedom Elite, Daybreak, Four Winds, Quantum, and Chateau motorhomes manages the electrical connection between the chassis battery and the coach battery system. It lets charging power move between battery circuits when needed, then separates those circuits so one battery system does not drain the other. On these Chevrolet-chassis motorhomes, that relay sits in the engine compartment, where heat and moisture matter.
The relay's plastic body expands and contracts in engine heat. That movement can weaken the case seal, letting water get inside the relay body. Once moisture reaches the internal electrical parts, arcing can occur inside the relay. That arcing creates heat and raises the risk of fire.
