If your VIN is in recall 20V683 for an electrical short, park outside until Land Rover completes the free software update at a franchised dealer.
An electrical short-circuit increases the risk of a fire. If the battery warning light appears, or if you smell burning or see smoke, stop safely, exit the vehicle, and call a Land Rover dealer. When parked, leave it outside and away from buildings or structures until the repair is complete. Repair is free at any franchised Land Rover dealer.
Land Rover is recalling 3,048 2020 Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport MHEV vehicles because the 48 volt electrical system can overload and cause a short circuit in the DCDC converter. The short circuit increases the risk of a fire, so owners should park outside and away from structures until a Land Rover dealer completes the free repair.

What's wrong?
The DCDC converter in the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport MHEV manages power between the 48 volt mild-hybrid system and the 12 volt electrical system. The 12 volt side feeds normal vehicle electronics, so the converter has to move power in a controlled way. Inside the converter, a MOSFET is a transistor that switches electrical flow on and off.
On affected vehicles, an overload in the 48 volt system can damage that MOSFET. Once the transistor fails, the electrical failure can cascade through the converter and create a short circuit where the 12 volt circuit shorts to ground. Instead of supporting the vehicle electronics, the 12 volt system discharges.
Before failure, the battery warning tell-tale on the instrument cluster will come on. In extreme cases, occupants can notice a burning smell or smoke venting from the DCDC converter into the passenger compartment. Those are warning signs that the electrical system is failing.

What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Land Rover technician updates the vehicle software for the electrical system. The recall repair is free, with parts and labor covered. Until that software update is complete, follow Land Rover's safety instruction: exit the vehicle after parking and park outside, away from buildings or other structures. Out-of-pocket repairs already paid are handled through Jaguar Land Rover's new vehicle warranty program, not through a separate reimbursement program, because all affected vehicles are still under warranty. Ask the service desk how warranty coverage applies if you have prior repair paperwork.
