What's wrong?
The rear seat belt set in the 2019 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell, Clarity Plug-In Hybrid, and Clarity Electric holds a rear passenger in place during a stop or crash. The belt feeds through a retractor, which lets the webbing move during normal use. Its webbing sensor is the part that locks the belt when the belt is pulled out quickly.
On affected vehicles, the problem starts inside the rear seat belt retractor. Tooling used to make the retractor was adjusted during a summer production shutdown. That process bent the pawl spring, a small spring-loaded part inside the retractor, and left the webbing sensor inoperative. With the sensor inoperative, the belt webbing does not lock the way it is designed to lock.
There is no warning sign before failure. The belt can look normal, latch normally, and still fail to lock as intended when the webbing sensor is needed.

What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Honda technician inspects the rear seat belt assembly production dates on the affected 2019 Clarity models. If an assembly is covered by the recall, the dealer replaces it. The recall repair is free, including parts and labor. Honda lists a general reimbursement plan for owners who already paid for a related rear seat belt repair before the recall notice.
