Recall 20V170 affects 1,500 2018-2020 Husqvarna Vitpilen 701 and Svartpilen 701 motorcycles for fuel leaks. Repair is free at any franchised Husqvarna dealer.

Husqvarna is recalling 1,500 2018-2020 Vitpilen 701 and Svartpilen 701 motorcycles under recall 20V170 because fuel can leak from the fuel level sensor and fuel pump mounting area. A fuel leak raises the risk of fire near an ignition source, and Husqvarna dealers will complete the repair free of charge.

What's wrong?

The fuel pump on 2018-2020 Husqvarna Vitpilen 701 and Svartpilen 701 motorcycles draws gasoline from the tank and sends it to the engine. The fuel level sensor measures fuel in the tank so the gauge can report what is left. Both parts mount at openings in the tank, where seals have to keep gasoline inside while the motorcycle is moving, parked, hot, or cooling down.

On affected motorcycles, the sealing surfaces around the fuel pump and fuel level sensor develop uneven areas over the vehicle's life cycle. When the surfaces are no longer flat enough, the seal between the mounting areas does not close as designed. Fuel can escape from those mounting points instead of staying contained in the tank.

The warning sign is fuel you can see or smell on or near the tank, either during operation or while the motorcycle is sitting still. In NHTSA campaign 20V170, that fuel leak is the defect because it increases the risk of injury or property damage.

Who's affected?

Covers Vitpilen 701 motorcycles from 2018-2020 and Svartpilen 701 motorcycles from 2019-2020, all tied to the same fuel system component.

What's the safety risk?

A fuel leak increases fire risk when an ignition source is present and raises the risk of injury or property damage. If you see or smell fuel near the tank, stop riding, keep the motorcycle away from flames or sparks, and call the dealer. Repair is free at any franchised Husqvarna dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2018-2020 Husqvarna Vitpilen 701 or Svartpilen 701 is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised Husqvarna dealer to schedule the free fuel-tank, gasket, and software repair that addresses fuel leaks from the fuel level sensor and fuel pump mounting area.
  3. Reference recall number 20V170 and Husqvarna recall HTB2012 when you call.
  4. Keep ignition sources away from the motorcycle until the repair is complete.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Husqvarna technician replaces the affected fuel tank, installs new gaskets for the fuel level sensor, fuel pump, and fuel tank insert, then updates the dash software so the fuel calibration is correct. The recall repair is free, including parts and labor. Husqvarna also offers reimbursement for previously repaired defects covered by this recall. If you already paid for this fuel tank repair, ask the service desk how to submit documentation for reimbursement.
