What's wrong?
The rear spoiler on the 2020 BMW X6 is the exterior trim piece mounted at the back of the vehicle. It is attached to the body with adhesive and is meant to stay fixed while air moves over the rear of the vehicle at road speed. When that bond is sound, the spoiler stays in place as part of the body structure.
On affected X6 vehicles, the supplier's adhesive process was unstable, so the adhesive was not spread in a uniform amount. That left some spoilers with a weaker bond than BMW specified. Testing found that a weakly bonded spoiler can come loose and detach from the vehicle at high speed, creating a road hazard for others.
Before detachment, occupants can hear an unusual noise from the rear of the vehicle. That noise is the warning sign that the spoiler is loose.

What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a BMW technician inspects the rear spoiler and replaces it if the inspection shows it is not secure. The inspection, replacement part, and labor are free under the recall. BMW says any related out-of-pocket repair before the owner notice falls under the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty program, so there is no separate reimbursement program for this campaign. Ask the service desk how that warranty coverage applies if you already have repair paperwork for the rear spoiler.
