Recall 20V011 covers 699 2007-2008 GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado trucks for exploding passenger air bag inflators. Free repair at any franchised GMC dealer.
GMC is recalling 699 2007-2008 Sierra 2500, Sierra 3500, Silverado 2500, and Silverado 3500 trucks because passenger frontal air bag inflators installed as interim Takata remedy parts can explode after heat and humidity degrade the propellant. An explosion can send sharp metal fragments into occupants and cause serious injury or death; dealers will replace the inflator free of charge.

What's wrong?
The passenger frontal air bag inflator in these 2007-2008 GMC Sierra 2500, Sierra 3500, Silverado 2500, and Silverado 3500 trucks is the metal canister inside the passenger air bag module. In a crash, it is supposed to create gas quickly so the air bag cushion fills before the passenger moves into the dashboard area.
The recalled inflators contain non-desiccated PSAN propellant, a chemical that breaks down after long exposure to humidity and repeated heat cycles. These were interim Takata replacement parts installed during an earlier recall, not the final desiccated inflators. If the propellant degrades, the inflator can explode instead of deploying in a controlled way.
There is no warning sign before failure. The air bag warning light does not give an owner a reliable way to know that this inflator has degraded.
Who's affected?
Covers four heavy-duty pickup models in the 2007 and 2008 model years, all tied to the passenger-side front air bag inflator module.

What's the safety risk?
A front passenger air bag inflator can explode and send sharp metal fragments into the front passenger or other occupants, causing serious injury or death. Schedule the inflator replacement promptly and ask the dealer how to handle the vehicle until the appointment. Repair is free at any franchised GMC dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2007-2008 GMC Sierra 2500, Sierra 3500, Silverado 2500, or Silverado 3500 is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised GMC dealer to schedule the free passenger front air bag inflator replacement.
- Reference recall number 20V011 and GM recall N192290990 when you call.
- Bring the recall notice if GM mailed one, or ask the dealer to look up the recall by VIN.
- Avoid using the front passenger seat until the inflator replacement is complete.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a GMC technician replaces the front passenger air bag inflator covered by recall 20V011. This is the inflator inside the passenger frontal air bag module, the part that deploys the passenger air bag in a crash. The replacement parts and labor are free under the recall. Call the GMC service desk with your VIN and GM recall number N192290990 so the dealer can confirm parts and schedule the repair.

Frequently asked questions
What is recall 20V011?
Recall 20V011 covers 699 2007-2008 GMC Sierra 2500, Sierra 3500, Silverado 2500, and Silverado 3500 vehicles with front passenger air bag inflators installed as interim Takata recall repairs. The inflators can explode and send sharp metal fragments into occupants.
What should I do if my 2007-2008 GMC Sierra 2500, Sierra 3500, Silverado 2500, or Silverado 3500 is on this recall?
Check your VIN to confirm your specific vehicle is included in recall 20V011. If it is, call a franchised GMC dealer and schedule the front passenger air bag inflator replacement. Reference recall number 20V011 and GM recall number N192290990 when you call.
Is the recall repair free?
Yes. Federal recall law requires the manufacturer to repair the defect at no cost, and GM's remedy says dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator free of charge. The recall repair has been available since February 11, 2020.
What is the safety risk?
The risk is an inflator explosion during air bag deployment. If that happens, sharp metal fragments can strike the front passenger or other occupants, causing serious injury or death. If your VIN is included, schedule the free inflator replacement before carrying a passenger in that seat.
What if I bought this truck used?
The free recall repair still applies. Recall coverage follows the vehicle, not the first owner. Check your VIN because owner letters from February 11, 2020 went to the addresses on file at that time, and a used truck owner never received one.
