2001-2011 INFINITI Recall 20V008: Air Bag Inflator

Recall 20V008 covers 307,962 2001-2011 INFINITI and Nissan vehicles with passenger air bag inflators that can explode. Repair is free at any franchised INFINITI dealer.

INFINITI is recalling 307,962 2001-2011 vehicles, including the I30, I35, FX35, M35, M45, QX4, Maxima, Pathfinder, Sentra, and Versa, because certain passenger air bag inflators installed as Takata interim remedy parts can explode after long exposure to heat and humidity. An inflator explosion can send sharp metal fragments into occupants, causing serious injury or death; INFINITI dealers will replace the inflator free of charge.

What's wrong?

The front passenger air bag inflator is the metal canister inside the passenger air bag module. In a crash, it produces gas that fills the air bag fast enough to help protect the passenger. The inflator has to open in a controlled way and keep its metal housing intact during deployment.

On these 2001-2011 vehicles, the recalled parts are non-desiccated Takata front passenger inflators that used PSAN propellant as interim remedy parts in earlier Takata recalls. Non-desiccated means the inflator lacks a drying agent. After long exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and repeated temperature cycling, the propellant degrades. During air bag deployment, that degraded propellant can cause the inflator to rupture instead of deploying normally.

There is no warning sign before failure. The rupture can happen during front passenger air bag deployment without any preceding warning.

Who's affected?

Covers multiple sedan, SUV, and crossover lines from 2001-2011, all tied to the passenger-side front air bag inflator module.

The year and model narrow the scope, but the VIN decides. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific vehicle is included.

What's the safety risk?

When the front passenger air bag deploys, a ruptured inflator can send sharp metal fragments into the cabin, striking the driver or passengers and causing serious injury or death. There is no warning sign before rupture. Confirm your VIN, then schedule the repair soon if included. Repair is free at any franchised INFINITI dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2001-2011 INFINITI model is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised INFINITI dealer to schedule the free front passenger air bag inflator replacement that removes the non-desiccated Takata interim inflator.
  3. Bring the recall notice if INFINITI has mailed one. If not, reference recall number 20V008 when you call.
  4. Avoid delaying the repair; the unrepaired passenger air bag inflator can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin.
  5. Call INFINITI customer service at 888-737-9511 with questions about scheduling or dealer availability.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, an INFINITI technician replaces the front passenger air bag inflators with alternate desiccated inflators. The recall repair is free, and parts and labor are covered. If you paid for a related front passenger air bag inflator repair before the recall notice, Nissan's owner notice includes reimbursement instructions for documented costs. Bring the paperwork to the service desk or contact INFINITI customer service.
