What's wrong?
The interior trunk release on the 2020 BMW 330I and M340I is the handle inside the trunk that releases the trunk latch from within. A Bowden cable connects that handle to the release mechanism, so pulling the handle moves the latch and opens the trunk. That connection is the point of the recall.
On included vehicles, the Bowden cable was not installed to BMW specifications. In some vehicles, the cable was not connected to the release mechanism at all. If the cable is loose or disconnected, the inside handle does not move the latch, so the trunk cannot be opened from the inside as required by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 401.
