2020 BMW 330I/M340I Recall 19V755: Trunk Release Cable

Recall 19V755 affects 325 2020 BMW 330I and M340I vehicles for an improperly installed trunk release cable. Repair is free at any franchised BMW dealer.

BMW is recalling 325 2020 330I and M340I vehicles because an improperly installed interior trunk release cable can keep the trunk from opening from the inside. If someone is trapped in the trunk, the faulty release can prevent escape and increase injury risk; BMW dealers will repair the cable free of charge.

What's wrong?

The interior trunk release on the 2020 BMW 330I and M340I is the handle inside the trunk that releases the trunk latch from within. A Bowden cable connects that handle to the release mechanism, so pulling the handle moves the latch and opens the trunk. That connection is the point of the recall.

On included vehicles, the Bowden cable was not installed to BMW specifications. In some vehicles, the cable was not connected to the release mechanism at all. If the cable is loose or disconnected, the inside handle does not move the latch, so the trunk cannot be opened from the inside as required by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 401.

There is no warning sign before failure. An owner is unlikely to know the inside trunk release does not work until someone tests the handle from inside the trunk.

Who's affected?

Covers the 330I and M340I in the same model year with the same trunk-lid body-structure component.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific sedan is included.

What's the safety risk?

An incorrectly installed interior trunk release cable can keep a person inside the trunk from getting out, increasing the risk of injury. Keep children away from the trunk area and schedule the inspection soon. Repair is free at any franchised BMW dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2020 BMW 330I or M340I is included in this recall.
  2. Contact your nearest franchised BMW dealer to schedule the free interior trunk release cable inspection and installation check that fixes the inside trunk-release issue.
  3. Bring the recall notice if BMW mailed one. If not, reference recall number 19V755 when you call.
  4. Keep children and passengers away from the trunk area until BMW completes the inspection and cable work.
  5. Call BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 with questions about scheduling or the free repair.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a BMW technician inspects the interior trunk release cable and properly installs the cable if it was installed incorrectly. Parts and labor are covered under the recall, so the dealer repair is free. BMW says any owner paid repair before the recall notice would be handled through the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty program, not through a separate reimbursement program. Ask the service desk how that warranty coverage applies if you have prior repair paperwork.
