What's wrong?
The Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve on the 2017 Subaru Impreza is part of the engine's breathing system. It routes crankcase vapors back into the engine to be burned instead of building pressure inside the crankcase. The valve has to stay sealed and in one piece so oil and vapor move through the intended path.
On affected Imprezas, the aluminum PCV valve case was assembled with too little press force. That weak joint lets the valve separate. Once it comes apart, oil enters the combustion chamber and separated pieces can move into the engine. That damage can cause a loss of power while driving.
There is no warning sign before failure. An owner should not count on a warning light, noise, or change in engine feel before the valve separates.

The year and model narrow the scope, but the VIN decides. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific car is included.
What's the safety risk?
An unexpected loss of power while driving raises the risk of a crash because the vehicle can slow without the driver choosing it. If your VIN is included, schedule the engine replacement promptly and drive cautiously until it is done. Repair is free at any franchised Subaru dealer.
