Recall 19V674 affects 1,746 2004-2020 Spartan Metrostar and Gladiator vehicles for unprotected air control lines. Repair is free at any franchised Spartan dealer.
Spartan is recalling 1,746 2004-2020 Metrostar and Gladiator emergency response vehicles equipped with pneumatically controlled automatic tire chains because the air pressure control lines lack required pressure protection. If a line is severed, air can suddenly leave the service reservoir and apply the brakes unexpectedly, increasing crash risk; the dealer repair is free.

What's wrong?
The automatic tire chain system on affected 2004-2020 Spartan Metrostar and Gladiator emergency vehicles uses air pressure to move tire chains into position when traction is needed. The same vehicle relies on stored air in service reservoirs to operate its air brake system, so the chain control line needs a protected connection that preserves brake air.
On these vehicles, the control line for the tire chain system was plumbed into service air reservoir 1 or service air reservoir 2 without the required pressure protection valve. That valve is meant to isolate the brake air supply from added air-operated equipment. Without it, the chain system connection leaves the brake air supply less protected than the air brake standard requires.
Owners or operators should hear the low-air audible warning and see the low-air indicator when pressure drops to the warning level. That low-air alert is the warning sign before the pressure problem reaches the driver.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether this recall applies to your specific truck.
What's the safety risk?
If the control line is severed, air can leave the service reservoir system suddenly and cause the brakes to apply unexpectedly, increasing crash risk. A low air audible alert and indicator come on when pressure drops, so treat that warning as a reason to pull over safely and call the dealer. Repair is free at any franchised Spartan dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2004-2020 Spartan Metrostar or Gladiator is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Spartan dealer to schedule the free inspection and control-line rerouting that keeps the automatic tire-chain control lines pressure-protected.
- Bring the recall notice if Spartan sent one. If not, reference recall number 19V674 when you call.
- Call Spartan customer service at 1-800-543-5008 with questions about scheduling or repair status.
- Drive with extra braking distance until the repair is complete, since a severed control line can trigger unexpected brake application.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Spartan technician inspects the routing of the automatic tire chain control lines. If the lines are not routed through the auxiliary air reservoir, the technician reroutes them there. The recall repair is free, with parts and labor covered. Spartan has a general reimbursement plan on file for documented repair costs paid before the recall notice. Contact Spartan customer service if you already paid out of pocket for the same control-line routing repair.

Frequently asked questions
What is recall 19V674?
Recall 19V674 covers 1,746 2004-2020 Spartan Metrostar and Gladiator emergency response vehicles with a pneumatically controlled automatic tire chain system. The air pressure control lines lack required pressure protection, which can let air leave the brake reservoir system if a line is severed.
What should I do if my 2004-2020 Spartan Metrostar or Gladiator is on this recall?
Check your VIN to confirm your specific vehicle is included in recall 19V674. If it is, contact a franchised Spartan dealer for an inspection of the tire chain system control-line routing. The dealer will reroute the lines into the auxiliary air reservoir as needed.
Is the recall repair free?
Yes. Federal recall law requires the defect remedy to be performed at no cost, and Spartan dealers will inspect and reroute the affected control lines free of charge. Reference recall 19V674 or Spartan recall number 19017 when you call.
Is it safe to drive my Spartan Metrostar or Gladiator before recall 19V674 is repaired?
The recall does not include a do-not-drive order, but the brake risk is real. If a control line is severed, air can suddenly leave the service reservoir system and apply the brakes unexpectedly, increasing crash risk. Ask Spartan at 1-800-543-5008 or the dealer for vehicle-specific guidance.
What if I bought my Spartan vehicle used?
The free recall repair still applies. Recalls follow the VIN, not the first owner, so a used Metrostar or Gladiator remains eligible if its VIN is included. Check your VIN, then give recall 19V674 to the Spartan dealer service desk.
