What's wrong?
The roof hatch on the 2020 Blue Bird Vision School Bus and All American School Bus is an emergency exit in the bus roof. These buses use a Specialty Prolo 24" x 24" roof hatch with an external release handle, so someone outside the bus can operate the hatch release when emergency access is needed.
The problem is in the cast metal handle. During production, one section of the casting mold was cooler than required, so the injected zinc cooled too quickly. That left voids in the handle stem, a condition called porosity. Those weak spots let the external handle break under normal operating loads, which stops the hatch release mechanism from being actuated from outside the bus.
There is no warning sign before failure. The handle can look normal until it breaks during use.
Who's affected?
Covers two Blue Bird school bus models with the same emergency exit and egress structure component.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific bus is included.
What's the safety risk?
If the roof hatch outer handle breaks, the emergency hatch is hard to open from outside the bus during a rescue, increasing the risk of injury. There is no warning sign before the handle breaks, so schedule the handle replacement with a dealer. Repair is free at any franchised Blue Bird dealer.
