Recall 19V500 affects 1,558 2005-2015 Honda and Acura vehicles for driver airbag inflators that can explode. Repair is free at any franchised Honda dealer.
Honda is recalling 1,558 vehicles across its 2005-2015 Acura and Honda lineup, including the RL, TL, ZDX, ILX, RDX, CR-V, CR-Z, Fit, Insight, and Ridgeline, because driver frontal air bag inflators installed as recall remedy or replacement parts can explode. An inflator rupture can send sharp metal fragments into the cabin, and Honda dealers will replace the inflator free of charge.

What's wrong?
The driver's frontal airbag inflator is the small metal canister inside the steering wheel that holds the propellant. In a crash, the propellant burns to produce gas, and that gas fills the airbag in a fraction of a second so it cushions your head and chest. The canister is built to contain that burn and release the gas through controlled vents.
On these Honda and Acura vehicles, the inflator is a Takata PSDI-5 unit installed as an earlier recall remedy or as a replacement service part. After long exposure to high humidity, high temperature, and repeated temperature swings, the propellant inside breaks down. When the airbag then deploys, the propellant can burn too aggressively and rupture the metal canister, sending sharp fragments into the cabin toward the driver.
There is no warning sign before failure. The inflator looks and works normally until a crash triggers it, which is why the dealer replacement is the only way to confirm the part is safe.

What's the safety risk?
An inflator explosion can send sharp metal fragments into the driver or other occupants, with the risk of serious injury or death. Treat this as urgent: schedule the repair as soon as a Honda dealer can take the vehicle, and keep any front-seat occupants aware of the risk until the inflator is replaced. Repair is free at any franchised Honda dealer.

Frequently asked questions
What is recall 19V500?
Recall 19V500 covers 1,558 Honda and Acura vehicles from the 2005-2015 model years that received a replacement driver frontal air bag inflator during a prior recall or service repair. The replacement inflator can degrade over time and explode during deployment, sending metal fragments toward the driver. Honda dealers will replace the inflator free of charge.
What should I do if my 2005-2015 Honda or Acura is on this recall?
Check your VIN to confirm your specific vehicle is included in recall 19V500. If it is, contact a franchised Honda or Acura dealer to schedule the driver air bag inflator replacement. Reference recall number 19V500 when you call, or contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. The repair is free.
Is the recall repair free?
Yes. Federal recall law requires manufacturers to repair safety defects at no cost to the owner. Honda dealers will replace the driver frontal air bag inflator free of charge regardless of where the vehicle was originally purchased or how the prior inflator was installed.
What if I bought my Honda or Acura used?
The free repair still applies. Federal recall law requires manufacturers to honor the recall regardless of ownership history, and these vehicles are old enough that many are on second or third owners. If Honda never mailed you a notice, check your VIN to confirm whether your specific vehicle is included, and reference recall number 19V500 when you call the dealer.
What is the safety risk?
The driver frontal air bag inflator can rupture when it deploys, sending sharp metal fragments toward the driver and other occupants. Honda states the result can be serious injury or death. The risk grows with long-term exposure to high humidity, heat, and temperature cycling, which degrades the inflator propellant over time.
