2001-2011 Acura/Honda Recall 19V499: Airbag Inflator

Recall 19V499 affects 3,947 2001-2011 Honda and Acura vehicles for driver airbag inflators that can explode. Repair is free at a franchised dealer.

Honda is recalling 3,947 2001-2011 Acura and Honda vehicles, including the Accord, Civic, CR-V, Element, Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline, MDX, TL, and CL, under recall 19V499 because driver frontal airbag inflators installed as recall remedy or replacement parts can explode. An inflator rupture can send sharp metal fragments into the cabin, and Honda and Acura dealers will replace the inflators for free.

What's wrong?

The driver's frontal airbag inflator is the metal canister inside the steering wheel that produces the gas to inflate the airbag in a crash. When the crash sensor fires, a chemical propellant inside the inflator burns very fast, and the resulting gas fills the airbag cushion in a fraction of a second. The inflator housing is built to contain that burn and direct the gas into the bag.

On the affected Honda and Acura vehicles, the inflators contain a propellant that degrades after long-term exposure to heat, humidity, and temperature swings. As the propellant breaks down, it burns more aggressively than designed. During a crash deployment, the pressure inside the inflator can rise high enough to rupture the metal housing, sending fragments toward the driver.

There is no warning sign before failure. The defect only reveals itself at the moment the airbag deploys, which is why the recall covers replacement of the inflator before a crash happens.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific vehicle is included in this recall.

What's the safety risk?

An inflator explosion can send sharp metal fragments into the driver or other occupants, causing serious injury or death. The failure happens without warning during a normal airbag deployment, so the safe step is to schedule the repair soon and avoid putting off the dealer visit. Repair is free at any franchised Acura dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2001-2011 Acura or Honda vehicle is included in this recall.
  2. Contact your nearest franchised Acura or Honda dealer to schedule the driver frontal air bag inflator replacement (the inflator can rupture and send metal fragments at the driver).
  3. Reference recall number 19V499 when you call to schedule the free replacement. Honda's internal numbers for this recall are Q5A and Y58.
  4. Bring the recall notice if Honda has mailed one, along with your VIN and current contact information.
  5. Drive cautiously until the repair is complete and avoid letting other drivers use the vehicle until the inflator is replaced.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, an Acura technician removes the driver frontal air bag inflator and installs a replacement unit. Parts and labor are free under the recall. The replacement addresses inflators that can degrade after long-term exposure to high humidity, heat, and temperature cycling. If you have already paid out of pocket for a related driver air bag inflator repair, Honda's standard reimbursement plan covers documented expenses. Bring your receipts and repair paperwork to the service desk when you arrive, and reference recall 19V499 so the advisor can confirm the work and process the claim.

What should I do if my 2001-2011 Honda or Acura is on this recall?

What is the safety risk?

The driver frontal airbag inflator can explode when deployed, sending sharp metal fragments toward the driver and other occupants. Per NHTSA, this can result in serious injury or death. The risk grows with long-term exposure to high humidity, heat, and temperature swings, which degrade the propellant inside the inflator.

What if I bought my Honda or Acura used?

The free repair still applies. Federal recall law requires manufacturers to honor the recall regardless of ownership history. If Honda never mailed you a notice, check your VIN to confirm whether your specific vehicle is included in recall 19V499, and reference that recall number when you call the dealer to schedule the inflator replacement.
