Audi is recalling 1,646 2019 E-Tron vehicles because moisture can enter the high-voltage battery through a faulty charging-socket seal. Moisture in that system can cause a short circuit and fire risk; Audi dealers will complete the free repair, and warning lights with "Electrical system: fault" mean stop, park outdoors, do not charge, and call Audi Roadside Assistance.

What's wrong?
The charging socket on the 2019 Audi E-Tron is the port where the charging cable connects to the vehicle. Wiring from that socket runs toward the high-voltage battery system, which stores power for propulsion and is sealed to keep moisture away from electrical components. A rubber seal, or grommet, is supposed to protect the wiring path where it passes through the charging socket area.
On affected E-Tron vehicles, that seal does not close the wiring path tightly enough when component tolerances and supplier manufacturing variation line up. Moisture enters at the charging socket, then travels along the wiring into the electronics box and high-voltage battery. Once moisture reaches those parts, DC charging can fail, and the battery electronics can short circuit and create a fire risk.
The warning sign is a message in the instrument cluster that says "Electrical system: fault." A yellow or red warning lamp also lights up when the system detects moisture in the high-voltage system.

What's the safety risk?
Moisture in the high-voltage system can short-circuit and increase the risk of fire. If the instrument cluster shows "Electrical system: fault" with a yellow or red warning lamp, stop driving, park outdoors away from structures, leave the vehicle unplugged, and contact Audi Roadside Assistance for towing. Repair is free at any franchised Audi dealer.

What happens at the repair
At the dealer, an Audi technician installs a new seal at the charging socket area and replaces affected high-voltage battery system components as needed. The parts and labor are free under the recall, and the repair is available through an Audi dealer. Audi will not offer reimbursement for this campaign, so prior out-of-pocket repairs are not covered through a separate recall reimbursement program.
