Subaru is recalling 256 of its 2019 Crosstrek SUVs under recall 19V404 because the driver's side rear-door window glass was not properly tempered and does not meet federal glazing safety standards. If the glass breaks, it can shatter into large pieces and raise the risk of injury, so Subaru dealers will replace the window free of charge.

What's wrong?
The rear-door window glass on the 2019 Crosstrek is tempered safety glass. Tempering is a heat treatment that puts the outer surface of the glass in compression, so that if the window ever breaks, it shatters into small, dull pieces instead of long, sharp shards. The driver's side rear window has to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 205, which sets the rules for automotive glazing.
On affected Crosstreks, an operator at the supplier's plant manually stopped a quench blower during the tempering run. The quench blower is what cools the hot glass quickly to lock in that protective compression. Without the full cooling step, the glass leaves the line either non-tempered or only partly tempered, so it can break into larger, sharper pieces in a crash or impact.
There is no warning sign before failure. The glass looks normal from inside and outside the vehicle, and the only way to confirm the window is the correct properly tempered part is through the dealer inspection.

What's the safety risk?
Improperly tempered glass in the driver's side rear-door window can shatter into large pieces, increasing the risk of injury to anyone seated nearby. There is no warning sign before the glass fails, so treat this as a reason to schedule the repair soon and keep passengers clear of the affected window in the meantime. Repair is free at any franchised Subaru dealer.
