What's wrong?
The power locking tailgate on these Ram trucks uses an electronic actuator to latch and unlatch the tailgate. Inside the actuator, a small plastic limiter tab controls how far the locking mechanism travels. When you press the key fob or interior button, the actuator moves the latch to either secure the tailgate against the truck bed or release it so you can drop it down.
On affected trucks, the limiter tab inside the tailgate actuator fractures. Once that tab breaks, the latch is no longer held in the locked position. Normal road vibration is enough to let the latch slip open, which means the tailgate can unlatch and swing open while you are driving. Anything in the bed, ladders, tools, lumber, motorcycles, then falls onto the road behind you.
There is no warning sign before failure. The tab sits hidden inside the actuator housing, so you cannot see the crack forming, and the tailgate feels normal right up until it releases on its own.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific pickup is included in this recall.
What's the safety risk?
If the tailgate opens while you are driving, cargo can fall onto the road and create a hazard for you and the vehicles behind you, raising the risk of a crash. Watch for a latch that does not catch firmly when you close the tailgate, and avoid hauling loose cargo until the repair is done. Repair is free at any franchised Ram dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2013-2018 Ram 1500, 2500, or 3500 is included in this recall.
- Contact your nearest franchised Ram dealer to schedule the free tailgate-latch repair that fixes the actuator limiter tab fracture causing tailgates to open while driving.
- Reference recall number 19V347 (FCA US recall V44) when you call the dealer so the service desk pulls the correct parts.
- Bring the recall notice if FCA US has mailed one. If not, the dealer can confirm coverage from your VIN.
- Avoid carrying loose cargo in the bed until the repair is complete, since the tailgate can open while driving and let cargo fall onto the road.
- Call FCA US customer service at 1-800-853-1403 with questions about scheduling or parts availability.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Ram technician repairs the power locking tailgate latch on your truck. Parts and labor are free under the recall. If you previously paid out of pocket for a tailgate latch repair, FCA US reimburses documented expenses through its standard owner reimbursement process. Send the original receipt or other adequate proof of payment to the company as described in the owner letter, or bring your receipts to the service desk when you arrive for the recall repair.
