What's wrong?
The engine block heater on affected 2017-2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, Silverado 3500, Silverado 4500, Silverado 6500, Duplicate Silverado 5500, Sierra 2500, and Sierra 3500 trucks warms the Duramax 6.6 liter diesel engine before startup. Its power cord plugs into an outside electrical source and feeds the heater mounted at the engine block.
The problem is at the heater cord or the terminals where that cord connects to the block heater. A coolant leak at the block heater can put coolant on the electrical terminals while the cord is plugged in. The cord can also short circuit if it is chafed or damaged from routing, use, or storage. In either path, the heater cord or terminals can short circuit and fail.
Owners can notice smoke or a burning smell, weak block-heater performance, tripped circuit breakers, or blown vehicle fuses. Other warning signs include visible damage to the block heater, heater cable, or nearby engine parts, or coolant pooling under the truck.

What's the safety risk?
A short circuit can damage engine components and increase the risk of fire. Watch for smoke, a burning smell, weak block heater performance, tripped breakers, blown fuses, heater damage, or coolant pooling under the vehicle. If you see these signs, stop using the block heater and call the dealer. Repair will be free at any franchised Chevrolet dealer once available.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2017-2019 Chevrolet Silverado 4500, Silverado 2500, Silverado 3500, Sierra 2500, Sierra 3500, Silverado 6500, or Duplicate Silverado 5500 is included in this recall.
- Wait for Chevrolet's repair notice before scheduling the final engine-block-heater repair.
- Avoid using the engine-block heater until the repair is complete because the heater cord or terminals can short circuit and damage engine components.
- Contact a franchised Chevrolet dealer once the repair opens for your VIN, and ask for the free engine-block-heater replacement or rerouted heater cord if your truck needs it.
- Reference recall number 19V328 and GM recall N182206310 when you call the dealer or Chevrolet customer service.
What happens at the repair
The final dealer repair will be free once Chevrolet opens it. At the dealer, a Chevrolet technician will replace the engine block heater. On Silverado 2500 and Silverado 3500 vehicles, the technician will also install a new rerouted heater cord. Parts and labor are covered under the recall. If you already paid for an engine block heater or heater cord repair tied to this issue, GM's standard reimbursement plan covers documented repairs. Keep your repair paperwork for the reimbursement claim.
