Recall 19V308 affects 34,006 2016 Volvo XC90 SUVs for a coolant bleeder hose that cracks and leaks. Repair is free at any franchised Volvo dealer.
Volvo is recalling 34,006 2016 XC90 SUVs under recall 19V308 because heat and humidity can crack the engine coolant bleeder hose and cause a coolant leak. If the leak goes unnoticed, coolant can collect in the catalytic converter heat shield insulation and catch fire while parked; Volvo dealers will replace the hose free of charge.

What's wrong?
The engine coolant bleeder hose on the 2016 Volvo XC90 is a small cooling-system line in the engine compartment. It helps route coolant and bleed trapped air so the engine can hold a controlled operating temperature. The hose has to tolerate engine heat, moisture, and pressure without cracking.
On affected XC90 vehicles, the original polyamide hose material can break down over time from heat and humidity. Once the material degrades, the hose cracks and coolant leaks into the engine bay. Volvo traced the concern to coolant reaching the catalytic converter area, a very hot exhaust part near the engine.
If a leak starts, the driver display can show a low coolant level warning or a high temperature warning from the coolant temperature sensor. After the vehicle has been moved, an owner can also notice leaked coolant on the ground under the vehicle.

What's the safety risk?
If the coolant leak goes unnoticed, coolant can collect in the catalytic converter heat shield insulation and catch fire while the vehicle is stationary, increasing injury risk. Watch for low coolant, high temperature warnings, or coolant on the ground after moving the vehicle. Schedule the repair soon. Repair is free at any franchised Volvo dealer.
