2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 Dodge Dart Recall 19V293: Shifter

Recall 19V293 affects 298,439 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 Dodge Dart vehicles for shifter-cable-bushing failure. Repair is free at any franchised Dodge dealer.

Dodge is recalling 298,439 Dart vehicles from 2012, 2014, 2015, and 2016 under recall 19V293 because the shifter cable bushing can fail and let the cable detach from the transmission. If that happens, the car can ignore the selected gear or roll away after PARK is selected; Dodge dealers will replace the bushing free of charge.

What's wrong?

The shifter cable bushing on affected 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 Dodge Dart vehicles is a small connector at the transmission end of the shift cable. In normal use, the shift lever inside the car pulls that cable, and the cable tells the automatic transmission which gear the driver selected.

On these Dart vehicles, the bushing degrades. Once it breaks down, the shift cable detaches from the transmission. The driver can still move the shift lever, but the transmission does not actually follow that command. That leaves the car in its current gear position, even when the lever appears to be in PARK.

There is no warning sign before the cable detaches. After detachment, the shift lever can feel much easier to move than usual, the gear indicators can show the transmission's actual gear regardless of lever position, and the door ajar warning can sound if the driver's door opens while the transmission is not in PARK.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether this recall applies to your specific vehicle.

What's the safety risk?

A detached shifter cable can keep the transmission from matching the gear selected by the driver. The vehicle can also roll away after the shifter is placed in PARK, increasing crash risk. There is no warning before detachment. If shifting suddenly feels too easy or warnings show the transmission is not in PARK, stop and call the dealer. Repair is free at any franchised Dodge dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 Dodge Dart is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised Dodge dealer to schedule the free shifter-cable-bushing replacement that keeps the shift cable attached to the transmission.
  3. Ask the dealer whether your Dart still needs the newer remedy that replaced this recall, even if it was repaired under recall 19V293.
  4. Bring the recall notice if Dodge has mailed one. If not, reference recall number 19V293 when you call.
  5. Set the parking brake every time you park until the repair is complete.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Dodge technician replaces the transmission side shifter cable bushing so the shift cable stays attached to the transmission. Parts and labor are covered under the recall. This campaign has been replaced by recall 25V674, so vehicles repaired under 19V293 still need the newer remedy completed. If you already paid for this repair before the owner letter, Dodge's reimbursement process asks customers to send the original receipt or other proof of payment for review.
