What's wrong?
The occupant restraint controller, or ORC, is the computer that coordinates passive safety equipment in the 2019 Renegade and 500X. It reads crash and restraint signals and tells supported features, including air bag and restraint functions, when to deploy or stay active. That controller has to keep the correct feature configuration in memory.
On affected vehicles, incorrect ORC software lets a diagnostic service tool read request change that feature configuration memory. After that incorrect update, certain passive safety features controlled by the ORC are disabled or deploy improperly when needed. The issue is software, not a broken sensor or a loose connector.
There is no warning sign before failure. Because the problem is inside stored controller software, the driver does not get a noise, smell, pedal change, or visible part damage before the safety features are disabled.
Who's affected?
Both listed models are tied to the same component categories: air bag system and electrical system software.
| 2019 Jeep Renegade | air bag system |
|---|---|
| 2019 Jeep Renegade | electrical system software |
| 2019 FIAT 500X | air bag system |
| 2019 FIAT 500X | electrical system software |
| Units affected | 25,004 |
| Field incidents | NHTSA has logged no field incidents to date. |
A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether this recall applies to your specific SUV.
What's the safety risk?
Deactivated passive safety features leave occupants with less protection in a crash and can increase the risk of injury. Until the software update is complete, keep alerts or restraint-system warnings on the dash from being ignored, and schedule the dealer repair soon. Repair is free at any franchised Jeep dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2019 Jeep Renegade or 500X is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Jeep dealer to schedule the free ORC module software update that keeps passive safety features active.
- Bring the recall notice if Jeep mailed one. If not, reference recall number 19V287 when you call.
- Drive with extra care until the software update is complete, since disabled passive safety features increase injury risk in a crash.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Jeep technician updates the occupant restraint controller software so the ORC module uses the correct programming for the vehicle's passive safety features. The software update and dealer labor are free under the recall. FCA US offers reimbursement for owners who already paid to repair this same problem before the recall notice. Send the original receipt or other adequate proof of payment to FCA US as described in the owner letter so the expense can be reviewed.
