What's wrong?
The steering column stub shaft is a short metal shaft inside the steering column assembly. On the 2019 Ram 1500 and Wrangler, it helps connect the steering wheel to the steering column, so the driver's steering input moves through the column as designed.
On affected vehicles, the inside bore of the stub shaft was machined too deeply. That leaves the shaft wall thinner than specification. A thin shaft wall does not have the intended strength, so the shaft can break under steering loads. If that happens, the steering wheel can detach from the steering column.
There is no warning sign before failure. The filing lists no noise, looseness, warning light, or steering feel change that tells an owner the shaft is about to break.
Who's affected?
VINs have been searchable since May 3, 2019. Both models involve the same steering system.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether this recall applies to your specific vehicle.
What's the safety risk?
A steering wheel that detaches from the steering column can leave the driver without steering control and increase crash risk. There is no warning sign before failure, so schedule the recall inspection and repair soon if your VIN is included. Repair is free at any franchised Ram dealer.

What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Ram technician inspects the steering column and checks the steering column stub shaft. If the column is affected, the technician replaces the steering column. Parts and labor are covered under the recall. If you already paid for a steering column related repair before the owner letter, the reimbursement plan asks you to send the original receipt or other proof of payment through the instructions in that letter so the expense can be reviewed.
