What's wrong?
The driver frontal air bag inflator in these 2001-2016 Acura vehicles is the metal gas generator inside the steering wheel air bag. In a crash, it is supposed to create a controlled burst of gas so the air bag fills before the driver moves forward.
On affected vehicles, the driver air bag inflator was installed during an earlier Takata recall repair or as part of a replacement driver air bag module. The PSDI-5D inflator has a manufacturing defect that can create higher than normal operating pressure during deployment. That excess pressure can rupture the inflator instead of letting it vent gas in a controlled way.
If the inflator ruptures, metal fragments can enter the cabin during a crash while the driver air bag is deploying. There is no warning sign before failure.
Who's affected?
Spans passenger cars, SUVs, minivans, and pickups across 2001-2016 model years, all tied to the same driver-side front air bag inflator module.
