What's wrong?
The fuel tank on the 2015-2016 KTM 1290 Super Adventure stores gasoline and feeds it to the engine while keeping fuel sealed away from the rider and hot parts. The tank cover mounting insert is the threaded area where the cover fastens to the tank, so that area has to stay solid and sealed during riding and while parked.
On affected motorcycles, the molded tank material did not reach the right temperature during manufacturing. That left material unevenly distributed around the threaded insert. Over time, fuel can leak from the tank cover mounting insert area because that section is weaker than intended. Corrected tank parts were made from February 2016 forward.
An owner can notice this before a repair. The rider can see fuel on or near the tank or smell gasoline near the motorcycle, either during operation or while the motorcycle is sitting still.
