What's wrong?
The pin box on a 2019 Forest River Columbus recreational trailer is the fifth-wheel hitch structure at the front of the trailer. It connects the trailer to the tow vehicle through the king pin and has to stay tight under pulling, braking, and turning loads. The mounting bolts and nuts hold that assembly in place.
On affected Columbus trailers equipped with MORryde Rubber Pin Boxes, the mounting bolts were not tightened to the required 135 ft./pounds of torque. MORryde traced the problem to an impact and air compressor tool combination that failed to tighten the nuts enough during installation. If the fasteners stay loose, the pin box can shift and the trailer can separate from the tow vehicle.
There is no warning sign before failure. Do not rely on noise, movement, or a visible gap to tell you the hitch assembly is secure.
