2018-2019 BMW X1 Recall 19V074: Taillight Housing Defect

Recall 19V074 affects 5,920 2018-2019 BMW X1 vehicles for loose taillights that can detach. Repair is free at any franchised BMW dealer.

BMW is recalling 5,920 2018-2019 X1 SUVs because contaminated hardware can crack taillight housing brackets and let the lights loosen or detach. A detached taillight no longer provides required lighting to following traffic and becomes a road hazard, increasing crash risk; BMW dealers will complete the recall repair free of charge.

What's wrong?

The rear taillight housings on the 2018-2019 BMW X1 hold the rear lamps in place and keep the brake, turn, and running lights aligned where other drivers can see them. Each lamp housing attaches to the body with securing nuts and plastic brackets, so the light stays tight through vibration, weather, and normal driving.

On affected X1 vehicles, those securing nuts had excessive cutting oil left on their surface during supplier production. That oil can soak into the plastic of the rear lamp housing and weaken the attachment bracket. Once the bracket cracks, the rear lamp loosens in the body opening. If the crack grows, the lamp separates from the housing or detaches from the vehicle.

Before failure, occupants can notice an unusual noise or vibration from the rear lamp area. That sound or vibration is the warning sign that the lamp housing is no longer held firmly.

What's the safety risk?

A detached taillight no longer gives following traffic the required lighting and can become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash. An unusual noise or vibration near the rear lamp is a warning sign. Drive cautiously and schedule the repair soon. Repair is free at any franchised BMW dealer.

What should I do?

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a BMW technician checks the taillight housings and properly secures the taillights so the lights stay attached to the vehicle. The recall repair is available now at an authorized BMW center, and parts and labor are free. Out-of-pocket repairs already paid are handled through the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty program, not through a separate reimbursement program. Ask the service desk how warranty coverage applies if you have prior repair paperwork.
