Pierce is recalling 994 2004-2018 Arrow Xt, Dash, Enforcer, Impel, Quantum, and Velocity aerial vehicles because the aerial device can unexpectedly rotate right while the ladder is being extended. What's wrong?

The 2004-2018 Pierce Quantum, Enforcer, Dash, Velocity, Impel, and Arrow Xt aerial vehicles use a Command ZoneTM II controller to manage the aerial device. That device is the ladder assembly that extends and rotates from the truck. The controller is supposed to take operator commands and translate them into controlled ladder movement.

On affected vehicles, the software control module has a RAM chip configuration problem. That configuration can generate an unintended signal inside the controller while the ladder is being extended. When that happens, the aerial device can rotate to the right even though the operator did not command that movement.

There is no warning sign before failure. The concern is not a noise, light, or gradual change an operator can check during use. Treat any included vehicle as needing the recall repair before the aerial device is relied on again.

A matching model year and Pierce model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific truck is included.

What's the safety risk?

Unexpected aerial-device movement can send the ladder toward a building, electrical wire, or another object, increasing the risk of injury. There is no warning sign before the controls move the device the wrong way. Treat unexpected movement as a reason to stop aerial operation and keep people clear. Repair will be free at any franchised Pierce dealer once available.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2004-2018 Pierce Quantum, Enforcer, Dash, Velocity, Impel, or Arrow Xt aerial vehicle is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised Pierce dealer to confirm repair timing for the free aerial control module reprogramming.
  3. Schedule the software repair that fixes unexpected right rotation when the ladder is being extended.
  4. Bring the recall notice if Pierce sent one. If not, reference recall number 19V022 when you call.
  5. Avoid extending the aerial ladder near buildings, electrical wires, or other objects until the repair is complete.

What happens at the repair

Pierce identifies the dealer repair as reprogramming the aerial control module that controls ladder movement. The recall began February 28, 2019, and the repair is listed as free of charge. If your vehicle still needs the campaign completed, a Pierce technician performs the module reprogramming at the dealer. Pierce has a general reimbursement plan on file for qualifying out-of-pocket repairs. Ask Pierce customer service at 1-888-974-3723 how to submit documentation for a prior related repair.
