What's wrong?
The passenger frontal air bag inflator is the metal gas generator inside the passenger air bag module in the instrument panel. In a frontal crash, the inflator is supposed to produce gas fast enough to fill the passenger air bag before the occupant moves forward. The part has to contain that pressure while the bag deploys.
On affected 2010-2016 Jeep vehicles, the recalled Takata passenger inflator uses non-desiccated PSAN propellant. Non-desiccated means the inflator lacks a drying agent inside the propellant package. After long exposure to high humidity, high heat, and heat cycling, that propellant degrades. When the air bag deploys, the degraded propellant can create excessive internal pressure and cause the inflator to explode instead of staying contained.
There is no warning sign before failure. The problem appears only during an air bag deployment, so a normal-looking dashboard or air bag light does not prove the passenger inflator is safe.

What's the safety risk?
In a crash that deploys the passenger frontal air bag, the inflator can explode and send metal fragments into occupants, causing serious injury or death. Do not drive the vehicle, even for short trips; arrange towing if it has to move before repair. Repair is free at any franchised Jeep dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm whether your 2010-2016 Jeep vehicle is included in this passenger air bag inflator recall.
- Do not drive the vehicle until the passenger air bag inflator replacement is complete.
- Arrange a tow if the vehicle has to be moved to the dealer; do not drive it there yourself.
- Contact a franchised Jeep dealer to schedule the free passenger air bag inflator replacement that prevents inflator rupture during deployment.
- Bring the recall notice if Jeep has mailed one. If not, reference recall number 19V018 and Jeep recall V01 when you call.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Jeep technician replaces the passenger frontal air bag inflator. The recall repair is free, including parts and labor. Do not drive the vehicle until that repair is complete. If you already paid for a related air bag inflator repair before the owner letter, Jeep's reimbursement process asks for the original receipt or other adequate proof of payment so the expense can be confirmed.
