What's wrong?
The affected part is the driver frontal air bag module inside an optional sport steering wheel on certain 2000-2004 BMW 540I, 525I, X5 Sav, and 530I vehicles. The module contains a Takata PSDI-4 inflator, the metal canister that creates gas to fill the air bag during a crash. It is supposed to deploy the air bag in a controlled way from the center of the steering wheel.
The problem starts inside the inflator. After years of exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and repeated temperature changes, the propellant inside the inflator degrades. In a crash that triggers the driver air bag, the inflator can rupture instead of inflating the bag normally.
There is no warning sign before failure. The filing does not identify a sound, smell, dashboard message, or change in steering-wheel feel that tells an owner the inflator is degrading.

What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2000-2004 BMW 540I, 525I, X5 Sav, or 530I is included in this recall.
- Do not drive the vehicle until BMW confirms whether the optional sports steering wheel has the affected driver air bag inflator and the repair is complete.
- Arrange a tow if the vehicle has to be moved to the dealer; do not drive it there yourself.
- Contact a franchised BMW dealer to schedule the free sports-steering-wheel inflator inspection and air bag module replacement that addresses the affected driver air bag inflator.
- Bring the recall notice if BMW mailed one. If not, reference recall number 19V015 when you call.
What happens at the repair
Do not drive the vehicle until this recall repair is complete. At the dealer, a BMW technician inspects the vehicle to see whether it has the optional sports steering wheel with an affected frontal air bag inflator. If it does, the technician replaces the air bag module. Parts and labor are free under the recall. For owners who already paid to replace the air bag module before the recall notice, BMW's standard reimbursement plan covers eligible documented expenses. Bring prior repair paperwork to the service desk or contact BMW customer service.
