Mercedes-Benz is recalling 288,779 2010-2017 C300, E350, GLK350, and related vehicles because passenger frontal air bag inflators can explode after long-term humidity, heat, and temperature cycling. An inflator explosion can send sharp metal fragments into occupants, raising the risk of serious injury or death; the Mercedes-Benz dealer repair is free.

What's wrong?
The passenger frontal air bag inflator in certain 2010-2017 Mercedes-Benz vehicles is the metal canister inside the passenger air bag module. In a crash, it is supposed to burn propellant in a controlled way so the air bag fills fast enough to protect the front passenger.
On affected vehicles, the Takata inflator uses PSAN propellant. Long exposure to high humidity, heat, and temperature cycling breaks down that propellant over time. If the air bag deploys after that degradation, the burn is too aggressive, pressure inside the inflator rises, and the inflator body can rupture instead of staying contained.
There is no warning sign before failure. An owner should not wait for a light, sound, smell, or change in how the vehicle drives before checking whether the VIN is included.
