2010-2014 Ford Multi-Model Recall 19V001: Air Bag Inflator

Ford is recalling 782,384 2010-2014 vehicles for passenger air bag inflators that can explode. Do not drive. Free repair at any franchised Ford dealer.

Do not drive

A passenger air bag inflator can explode and send sharp metal fragments into the driver or other occupants, causing serious injury or death. Do not drive the vehicle, even for short trips, until the inflator has been replaced. Arrange towing if the vehicle must move. Repair is free at any franchised Ford dealer.

Ford is recalling 782,384 2010-2014 Mustang, Ranger, Edge, Fusion, Milan, Mkx, Mkz, and Zephyr vehicles under recall 19V001 because the passenger frontal air bag inflator can explode after long-term heat and humidity exposure. An explosion can send sharp metal fragments into occupants. Do not drive an included vehicle until a Ford dealer completes the free repair.

RecallNotify doesn't check your VIN — NHTSA's official tool does. We use your email only to alert you to new recalls.

What's wrong?

The passenger frontal air bag inflator in these 2010-2014 Ford Mustang, Ranger, Edge, Fusion, Mkx, Mkz, Milan, and Zephyr vehicles is the metal gas generator inside the passenger air bag module. In a crash, it is supposed to ignite its propellant in a controlled way, fill the air bag, and help protect the front passenger.

The problem is the Takata inflator's ammonium nitrate propellant. After long exposure to high humidity, heat, and temperature cycling, that propellant degrades. During deployment, the inflator can rupture instead of opening normally, sending metal fragments into the cabin. The replacement part uses a different design and does not contain ammonium nitrate.

There is no warning sign before failure. The air bag light is not a dependable way to know whether this inflator has degraded, so the VIN is what confirms whether the recall applies.

What's the safety risk?

A passenger air bag inflator can explode and send sharp metal fragments into the driver or other occupants, causing serious injury or death. Do not drive the vehicle, even for short trips, until the inflator has been replaced. Arrange towing if the vehicle must move. Repair is free at any franchised Ford dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2010-2014 Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury vehicle is included in this recall.
  2. Do not drive the vehicle until the passenger frontal air bag inflator repair is complete.
  3. Arrange a tow if the vehicle has to be moved to the dealer; do not drive it there yourself.
  4. Contact a franchised Ford dealer to schedule the free passenger frontal air bag inflator replacement for the inflator explosion risk.
  5. Bring the recall notice if Ford sent one. Reference recall number 19V001 and Ford recall 19S01 when you call.

What happens at the repair

Do not drive the vehicle until the repair is complete. At the dealer, a Ford technician replaces the passenger frontal air bag inflator in the affected air bag module. Parts and labor are free under the recall. Ford has a general reimbursement plan on file for this campaign, so owners who already paid for a related passenger air bag inflator repair should ask Ford customer service or the service desk how to submit documented expenses under that plan.
