Recall 18V892 covers 28 2017-2019 Blue Bird Vision buses for air compressor belt slip. Repair will be free once available.
Blue Bird is recalling 28 2017-2019 Vision school buses equipped with Cummins ISV5.0 diesel engines and optional CP80009 air compressors because the air compressor belt can slip and reduce air output. If the parking brake applies while the bus is moving, crash risk increases; the Blue Bird dealer repair will be free once the remedy is available.

What's wrong?
The 2017-2019 Blue Bird Vision buses in this recall use a Cummins ISV5.0 diesel engine with an optional CP80009 air compressor. A drive belt turns the compressor pulley, and the compressor builds the air pressure that the air brake system uses for braking and parking-brake control.
On affected buses, the belt does not wrap far enough around the compressor pulley. With too little contact area, the belt slips as it wears. That slip reduces compressor output, so the air system rebuilds pressure more slowly. If pressure drops far enough, brake performance deteriorates and the fail-safe system automatically applies the brakes after the stored air capacity is used.
Drivers can notice increased brake pedal travel as the condition progresses. Below approximately 65 psi, dashboard lamps illuminate and an audible alarm sounds for low air pressure. Drivers and service technicians can also hear belt squeal when the belt slips.

What's the safety risk?
If the parking brake applies while the vehicle is moving, crash risk increases. Increased brake pedal travel, dashboard warning lamps, an audible low pressure alarm, or belt squeal mean the air brake system needs attention before the trip continues. Drive cautiously and schedule the belt replacement with a dealer. Repair will be free at any franchised Blue Bird dealer once available.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2017-2019 Blue Bird Vision is included in this recall.
- Use Blue Bird's owner notice, if you have it, when you call about current repair instructions.
- Contact Blue Bird customer service at 1-478-822-2242 and reference recall number 18V892 (Blue Bird recall R19ZW-SB).
- Ask a franchised Blue Bird dealer about the shorter air-compressor-belt replacement that keeps the belt from slipping and reducing air output to the parking brake system.
- Drive cautiously until the repair is complete and stop in a safe place if the parking brake applies while the bus is moving.
What happens at the repair
Blue Bird's planned dealer repair is to replace the existing air compressor belt with a shorter belt that fits the Cummins ISV5.0 air compressor setup. Once the repair is available, a Blue Bird technician will remove the current belt, install the new shorter belt, and check that the air compressor drive is working as intended. The final dealer repair will be free once available, with parts and labor covered under recall 18V892.

Frequently asked questions
What is recall 18V892?
Recall 18V892 covers 28 2017-2019 Blue Bird Vision school buses with Cummins ISV5.0 diesel engines and optional CP80009 air compressors. The air compressor belt can slip, reduce air output, and cause the parking brake to apply while the bus is being driven.
What should I do if my 2017-2019 Blue Bird Vision is on this recall?
Check your VIN to confirm your specific bus is included in recall 18V892. If it is, contact a franchised Blue Bird dealer to schedule the air compressor belt replacement. Reference recall number 18V892 when you call. The repair is free.
Does the recall repair cost anything?
No. Federal recall law requires manufacturers to repair safety defects at no cost. Blue Bird dealers replace the existing air compressor belt with a shorter air compressor belt free of charge.
What is the safety risk?
The safety risk is unwanted parking brake application while the bus is moving. If the air compressor belt slips and air output drops, the parking brake can apply during driving, increasing crash risk. The free dealer repair addresses the belt issue.
When did Blue Bird notify owners?
Blue Bird notified owners, and the recall began February 1, 2019. If you own or operate a 2017-2019 Blue Bird Vision bus, check the VIN because mailed notices do not always reach later owners or fleet operators.
